Dear CHS Students and Families:
I hope that you are all taking precautions necessary to keep yourself safe and healthy. I understand that this is very difficult
for high school students, particularly seniors. This is an unprecedented situation and it is greatly impacting our high school students. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this very trying time. I am writing to you today to provide you
with some updates and guidance going forward. We are receiving guidance from the state and federal level regularly and
will always keep you informed in a timely manner.
- Students should engage DAILY with the google classrooms their teachers have developed. We have not received any guidance from the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) on grading, credits or grade advancement. For now, all high school students should be completing the academic materials until we are provided with specifics from the CSDE on how to handle grading, attendance, and credit bearing courses. The number one priority for the Commissioner of Education has been safety and equity for all students.
- To date, we have not canceled any prom or graduation ceremonies. We will take this situation as it comes and make hard decisions about those events if needed.
- Teachers will be reaching out to students regularly via classrooms to provide feedback and answer questions. They will also be checking up on students who may not be participating to see how they can best support them.
- Families or students needing any support with creating successful learning environments at home should contact their classroom teacher, Mr. Kuckel or Mrs. DiFiore for resources.
- The March 25th SAT School Day Testing has been postponed.
Important information for students who are enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses:
Advance Placement end of course assessment will now be taken from home using a device. Please anticipate still taking the assessment. Teachers will update you on the days the assessment will be administered as more information becomes available. Please proceed through the course as if you were still in the classroom. For AP students, the course requirements have not changed.
Instructionally, as a district we are trying to employ the safest and most effective ways to reach out students and families.
At this point, we have been made aware of concerns about hackers inserting inappropriate material into virtual face to face platforms. Because of this, our students’ safety is at risk so we are discouraging the use of such platforms until we can be reassured of the safety of such programs.
We understand that every family is in a unique situation under the current circumstances. We are asking that you prioritize
time during the day for your high school student to engage with their academics. Teachers and administrators are available
to support your children and you during this time. Please reach out to them!
Information and advice to districts is coming regularly. We will keep you updated with any change in plans. We appreciate your patience because things are ever changing as the situation continues to unfold.
